Intro to a new story posted on Stuk. Read more at www.simplystuk.wordpress.com

Trapped in the throes of a nightmare, I wake up blind. The darkness is hostile, thick in silence and stifling warmth. It takes time to stand up, calming my jackrabbit heart and suffocating my urgent mumblings before trying to lift myself up. The stilts my legs have been replaced with shake as balance becomes precious, fleeting. Two tries and I’m standing up, finally stable for longer than one fear-filled breath.

For one second I start to panic, the fingers of gravity reaching up to graze the back of my exposed neck. Shouldn’t I have a cane or something? To steady, to scout, even to swing wildly at the hateful darkness, a stick of wood with a copper tip would be better than bare palms.

Finally inevitability has its laugh as one unwary toe smashes into unyielding wood. Wind rushes past my face, cool and refreshing oxygen lending carefree momentum to the descent.

The carpet is rougher against my face than I remember.
